How to Find a Dentist That Takes Your Insurance

“Do you take my insurance?” sounds like a yes-or-no question. It often is not. An office may submit claims to an insurer without being in network for your exact plan. The safest approach is to verify the dentist, location, plan, and expected patient cost before treatment.

Start with the insurer, then confirm with the office

Use the provider directory supplied by the company that administers your dental plan. Search with your current ZIP code and exact plan name, not only the insurer’s brand. Directory information can change, so treat the result as a lead rather than final proof.

Call the dental office with the dentist’s name, office location, insurer, plan name, and member ID available. Ask whether that dentist is currently in network at that specific location. A group may have several dentists or locations with different participation.

  • Is this dentist in network for my exact plan?
  • Are you accepting new patients with this plan?
  • Will you verify benefits before my appointment?
  • Is there a waiting period, frequency limit, or annual maximum that may apply?

Ask for an estimate, not a promise

A benefits check is not a guarantee of payment. The final amount can change after the dentist examines you, submits procedure codes, and the insurer processes the claim. Ask the office for a written treatment estimate showing the office fee, estimated insurance payment, and estimated patient portion.

For treatment beyond routine preventive care, ask whether a pre-treatment estimate can be submitted to the insurer. Also ask whether the proposed service is subject to a deductible, coinsurance, frequency limit, alternative benefit, or annual maximum.

If you have Utah Medicaid

Utah Medicaid directs members to its dental provider list, InsureKidsNow.gov, or a Health Program Representative. A dentist must accept Medicaid for the covered visit, and some services may require prior authorization. Confirm participation and authorization requirements before treatment.

The five-minute insurance checklist

Before booking, write down the name of the person who confirmed your benefits and the date of the call.

  • Confirm the exact dentist and location.
  • Confirm in-network status, not merely that the office accepts or bills the insurer.
  • Ask what the first visit includes and what each part costs.
  • Request a written estimate for additional treatment.
  • Call the insurer yourself when the cost or treatment is significant.
